This is Sugama of the TAILORS WORLD editorial department. In Japan, around spring each year, the Imperial Household hosts a spring garden party and the awarding of medals by the Emperor of Japan, but in recent years the COVID19 has forced the cancellation of this event.

Because of my profession, I am often asked about appropriate attire for attending garden parties and receiving orders, so I have compiled a summary of orders in this issue.

Types of Medals of Honor.”

There are two main types of medals: the Order of Merit and the Medal of Honor, each of which is divided into several categories. There are two main types of orders: the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, the Grand Cordon of the Paulownia Flowers, the Order of the Rising Sun, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and the Order of Culture.

The Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers are awarded to those who have served as the heads of the three branches of government: Prime Minister, House of Representatives, Speaker of the House of Councillors, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette is awarded to those who have made outstanding achievements focusing on their merits, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure is awarded to those who have served in public service for many years and achieved distinguished results. The Order of Cultural Merit is awarded to those who have made particular contributions to the development of science and culture.

Design of the Medal of Honor.”

The design of each type of medal differs. The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun has a design of a chrysanthemum, the Imperial Crest, and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers has a design of a paulownia flower on the rising sun. The Order of the Rising Sun has a design of the rising sun with rays of light centered on the emblem of the national flag, Hinomaru, and is said to show the spirit of the rising sun. The Order of the Sacred Treasure is designed around a mirror, which was an ancient treasure, with 16 beads of various sizes and four or eight rays of light.

The Order of Cultural Merit consists of a five-petaled white flower of tachibana, with a white three-petaled white carved bead on a red ground in the center.

How to Wear the Medal of Honor.”

When attaching the medal to clothing, use the medal fittings in the image above for easy attachment.

Although the awarding of medals is not something that the general public, including myself, is familiar with, I think it is worthwhile for tailors who tailor costumes for the recipients to know about it in order to communicate with their customers.
